Cytology of mesothelioma

cytological specimens are cellular and composed of cells that resemble benign mesothelial
cells, however show additional atypia, nuclear enlargement, and
giant cell clusters. cells show a vary of atypia inside an equivalent
specimen instead of 2 obvious populations of cells (normal
mesothelial cells and malignant cells), as would be seen with
involvement by carcinoma. giant cells and signet ring forms
is seen. the differential diagnosis includes primary or
metastatic carcinoma. therefore, a cell block preparation on which
immunohistochemical stains is performed is essential. in
a few cases, electron microscopy is applied to cytologic
specimens.
